Bit seats in horses

The bit seat technique is WRONGLY presented as essential for the comfort of horses wearing a bit. Discover how this method can cause pain and harm your horse’s performance.

What is a bit seat?

A bit seat involves filing certain dental areas to reduce the pressure of the bit. However, the bit is not supposed to touch the horse’s teeth at all! This is painful, and that’s why wolf teeth (which do come into contact with the bit) are usually removed.

Why should you avoid bit seats for your horse?

By supposedly reducing friction points, a bit seat can cause internal damage to the tooth – reaching its vital part (nerves/blood vessels). It does not prevent oral injuries nor improve bit acceptance. This is a myth.

How is a bit seat performed?

A “dentist” uses special tools to modify the shape of the horse’s teeth. This procedure alters the horse’s natural anatomy so it can accommodate a bit (which is unnatural and placed too high in the mouth).
